Parish councils are the first tier of local government and perform an important role.

The parish council sets its own budget (precept) which it can spend to maintain and improve facilities and services within the parish, as well as to support local organisations and community groups.

The Parish Council has eleven elected members representing two wards. South Ward (6 members) covers the village of Cheveley. North Ward (5 members) covers the Newmarket Fringe area between Duchess Drive and Ashley Road.

Full council meetings are held in the Garden Room, The Parish Hall, 102 High Street, Cheveley CB8 9DG at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month. The agenda and minutes of meetings are available on this website.

The Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer (RFO) is employed on a part time basis to advise Council in respect of legislation and procedure, and is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the Council.

Cheveley Parish Council is routinely consulted by East Cambridgeshire District Council on matters concerning residents, such as planning applications, highways and street lighting.

The parish hall has two rooms that are available for private hire by individuals or groups.  Details can be found here

The Cheveley Pavilion & Recreation Ground Trust operates and manages the pavilion and recreation ground for the benefit of the community.  The Pavilion can be hired by groups and individuals – please contact the Clerk for further details.

Monthly meetings of the Charity follow immediately after the monthly Parish Council  meeting which is on the second Tuesday of the month.

Cheveley Parish Council operates a part time service.

Cheveley Parish Council does not have an office for walk-in enquiries or full time clerk services. The Council endeavours to respond to enquiries within 5 working days (with the exception of burial matters see below) but the public should expect delays.

Burial matters should continue to be emailed or telephoned to the Clerk/office contact who will attend to them as soon as possible irrespective of timings.
